Authors Preface to the Revised Edition
I wrote Life*Time Astrology (1984) and The Divine Plot (1986) in
sequence, and they are a natural pair of books. Life*Time Astrology
describes a unique logarithmic time scale for interpreting the astrolog
ical horoscope from conception to old age, incorporating a transcenident octave of higher consciousness, outside of time. I wrote the book
following the The Round Art so astrologers could utilize these powerful
ideas in their counselling, predictive, and therapeutic work.
In working with clients, I discovered two important principles. By
reconstructing events at conception, I realized that the horoscope often
showed events that happened before conception: a previous miscar
riage or abortion, a family tragedy, a separation, or other traumatic
influences. This fascinated me and led to much deep study and medita
tion. I realized the truth of the Freudian axiom that we recapitulate the
life of our species in our own life, which he called ontogeny recapitu
lates phylogeny . In many ways, this evokes both the idea of reincarna
tion and foreshadows potential higher functions of the DNA molecule
as a repository of all history within us the legendary Akashic Record
of esoteric mysticism.
These ideas led me to write The Divine Plot, which places our indi
vidual life in the context of a logarithmically graded panorama of his
tory and cyclical time: reincarnation is how we mirror history in our
selves. Indeed the system proved so accurate that one could determine
the exact times in history of previous reincarnations. Positive valida
tions happened in cases when people knew previous incarnations or
did creative work that reconstructed history. It worked with historical
individuals who remembered their past lives, incarnate lamas, authors,
musicians, historians, archaeologists, and those with an interest in the
past. The accuracy of The Divine Plot has helped many of my clients
and has proven to be a valuable and testable guide to our inner history.
These books have been in print for almost two decades and I realized
that it would be timely to combine them in this unique edition so that
we can see them as the intended whole. I discovered in the process the
uncanny relevance of many of my early intuitions about history, genet
ics, time, physics, and other developments.
The Divine Life is a model of reality rather than a literal truth. It is
an attempt to map the territory, rather than claiming to be the territo
ry itself. This is especially the case when I applied the reincarnation
time scale to history. I initially used the millennial date 2000 as the end
of a world age as a working hypothesis, although I would now modify
that to 2012 as a logical date indicated by the Mayan calendar and other
sources.
I would especially like to acknowledge Margo Russell (1938-2001) for
her perceptive and penetrating editing of both of my original books.
My literary agents Sandra Martin and Lisa Hagan of Paraview have
supported me in bringing this new edition into being. I would also like
to thank Judith Taylor Wheelock for her friendship and philosophical
support, her wise counsel, and her astute and helpful reading of the
book. Laurence Henderson of Vega has been a supportive publisher.
